About BookBuddies

Our Mission

BookBuddies helps parents choose picture books based on developmental science. We use Erikson's psychosocial development stages to match books to your child's current needs, so you know exactly why each book matters for their growth.

What Makes Us Different

  • Erikson-Based Organization โ€” Books are categorized by psychosocial development stages, not just age
  • Scare Factor Ratings โ€” Unique data: is there anything scary? What's the right age for this book?
  • Read-Aloud Time โ€” Practical filter: how long does reading this book actually take?
  • Benefit Labels โ€” Clear explanations of what each book supports in your child's development

The Science Behind It

Erik Erikson identified four psychosocial stages during childhood:

  • Trust vs. Mistrust (0-18 months) โ€” Building security and attachment
  • Autonomy vs. Shame (18 months-3 years) โ€” Developing independence
  • Initiative vs. Guilt (3-6 years) โ€” Exploring and taking action
  • Industry vs. Inferiority (6-12 years) โ€” Developing skills and comparing to peers

Each stage has unique needs. Books chosen for the right stage support your child's healthy development in ways that general "age-appropriate" recommendations cannot.
